<b>Fly Fishing With Steve Lein</b></h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
October 2012</div>
<br />
The Chama River, just below El Vado Dam, is a highly productive stretch of river. Our family has been fishing this section of the river for more than 50 years and we are never disappointed. If you are interested in doing some serious fly fishing in New Mexico, our recommendation for you would be to have you contact David Cooper, owner of Coopers El Vado Ranch. Coop has a dozen really great cabins, located right along the river. These cabins offer all of the amenities that you will need to be completely comfortable in your stay at the ranch.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmhtHsGLqS_DDc-v1ye10CXjM_vZ2mr1PREFltbVY7-c8XGWJwuDKG6arrsAbdnvHZwc4F2wzkdMd3_csfimh6JOH37XPdcegtswBjcWkPm6oNk3EIMaFQMH7nTyp6XVxelxuHJxuKlKw/s1600/photo+(30).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmhtHsGLqS_DDc-v1ye10CXjM_vZ2mr1PREFltbVY7-c8XGWJwuDKG6arrsAbdnvHZwc4F2wzkdMd3_csfimh6JOH37XPdcegtswBjcWkPm6oNk3EIMaFQMH7nTyp6XVxelxuHJxuKlKw/s320/photo+(30).JPG" width="240" /></a>Steve Lein traveled down from Tulsa, Oklahoma and spent 3 days hiking and fishing with me. We covered a 10 mile stretch of water during the 3 day trip. Steve and I really had a great time together and caught a ton of gorgeous rainbow and brown trout during the fishing adventure.<br />
<br />
Coopers El Vado Ranch offers super easy access to the river for fishermen of all levels. Steve and I choose to take on some of the more remote fishing spots which required some serious hiking. We hiked approximately 6 miles per day during our 3 day adventure. Our treks included river crossings which aren't for the faint at heart. The Chama is a wild river that gets pretty wide in spots. Even though Steve is a banker back in Tulsa, he crossed the river just like he did when we were kids.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The area pictured above is approximately 1 1/2 miles below El Vado Dam. It's a challenging hike to get into this particular fishing spot, but, well worth the effort. Our grandfather and father fished this stretch of river some 40 years ago and caught 25 to 30 inch rainbows and brown trout routinely from this section of the river. Today, you can see expect to catch fish in excess of 20 inches in this area. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This particular fishing hole requires some serious hiking. I don't recommend fishing this area unless you are extremely physically fit. The hike into this section of river is approximately 3 miles and takes us approximately 1 1/2 hours of steady trekking. You will also need to cross the river at least once to get to this gorgeous spot.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Just spent a few days there earlier this month with my wife, mom and dad. We had an awesome time. I have been fishing this particular stretch of river for more than 45 years. The fish we caught this year during our visits in April and September were a bit smaller than the 36 inch monsters my pops and grandfather used to pull out 40 years ago. That said, they were still incredibly solid fish and full of fight. Check out the photo to the right. This Brown Trout was caught in September during a huge rain storm. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Chama river is absolutely loaded with native brown trout, similar to the one pictured. The river offers the perfect breeding area for these fish. There are major bug hatches during year, plus the rainbows spawn in April filling the river with minnows. The Browns spawn later in October, again providing food opportunities for the larger fish. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

This could save you the trouble and needless expense of facing a hefty fine for a rule infraction. Each state has specific rules and regulations in regards to fishing. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Keep these tips in mind when you relocate after a move:</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Your Best Source for Information<o:p></o:p></span></b></div><br />
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">It is imperative that you receive accurate information about the specific rules and regulations of fishing in your new area. The last thing you want is to receive a citation and pay a stiff fine simply for lack of local fishing regulation knowledge. Turn to your state’s fish and game website. This can be easily hunted down on Google by typing your state’s name and the keywords, “fish and game.” Click on your state’s link and research the regulation section. Most websites allow you to download the fishing guide for future reference.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Fall on the Appalachain Trail provides an incredible opportunity to do some long distance mountain trail running. You can connect to the Appalachian Trail by driving to Amicalola Falls and jumping onto the connector trails that lead to Springer Mountain. From the ranger station to Springer is approximately 8.5 miles. It's a challenging run so carry lots of water with you. On an average Summer day, I personally go through at least four 16oz drinks when making the round trip. That doesn't include the extra water bottle I take for dumping on my head to cool off. In the Fall, you can get away with carrying about half that amount. </span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You have closed escrow and are done <a href="http://mymove.com/">moving</a> into your new house. Your clothes are put away and you are excited to discover and explore all your new neighborhood has to offer. The adventurer in you is ready to hit the nearest trail. But, before you head out to discover your local trails, use these tips to make the most of your next run, walk or hike:</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>1. Your Local Bookstore or Library</strong>: Your local library is still a valuable resource when searching for unknown trails. They offer books and maps which feature detailed trails and the best part is they are free. If you prefer owning your maps and books, head out to your nearest bookstore. Browse the hiking section for maps and books, which will lead you to undiscovered trails. And, don’t forget to talk to your new librarian or bookstore employee. You never know where you might uncover a secret trail near your new house. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>2. The Internet</strong>: If you prefer to shop or search online, visit websites like www.trails.com to discover a variety of information on <a href="http://www.trails.com/">trail running</a>. There is an array of websites devoted to trail running. It takes a little research time, but you can usually unearth running trails in your neighborhood. The Internet can also be a great resource for finding running buddies or websites devoted to local trails. Blogs or community boards can give you tips on little known trails off the beaten path. Connect with other local runners, walkers or hikers to discover some of the best running trails. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>3. Local Government Entities</strong>: After you <a href="http://mymove.com/">move</a>, visit your federal, state or local government website or offices for detailed and informative information on local trail running. Websites like <a href="http://www.fws.gov/">http://www.fws.gov/</a> provide accurate information on local trails near you. They will provide you with trail locations, weather conditions, special permits and other pertinent information to make your run a success. The same can be said about your state or local government. Most states and cities have comprehensive websites for residents. They offer detailed information and insight into your local community trails and outdoor activities. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>4. Talk to Your Neighbors</strong>: Your new neighbors can prove to be the best resources for discovering local running trails -- even if you don’t think they are runners or hikers. Their brother or cousin might be an avid trail runner. You can never tell who has an interest in running, and you might just miss out on the opportunity to discover a whole new world right in your own backyard.</span></div>Flyline Search Marketinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13994208871654360480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1165097449170515788.post-30693738780896541112011-09-17T06:23:00.000-07:002011-09-18T13:32:55.073-07:00Fishing The San Juan With My Father<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH00QRpT_rk_lJIr23FPA8VGgRduSUjN13MUiKXf1fofqLexoyDWb_gWf_80-xcH-3_vrvtC2KlekaNSNJOisT1RJ6lZV0wWzw_-q794b7JXE55PLZmugmlD1uUmKJGQlqtbO3gi6CWFg/s1600/Mark_Fish_SanJuan+River++9+7+11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300px" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH00QRpT_rk_lJIr23FPA8VGgRduSUjN13MUiKXf1fofqLexoyDWb_gWf_80-xcH-3_vrvtC2KlekaNSNJOisT1RJ6lZV0wWzw_-q794b7JXE55PLZmugmlD1uUmKJGQlqtbO3gi6CWFg/s400/Mark_Fish_SanJuan+River++9+7+11.jpg" width="400px" /></a></div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If you have never fished the San Juan river you are missing a real treat. I took my father on a float trip down the San Juan a few weeks ago and he and I had a fabulous time. We caught a ton of fish and our guide, Matthew Cliffton, owner of Tailwaters Anglers, did an outstanding job.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The San Juan River area we fished was directly below the <a href="http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/prd/navajo.htm"><strong>Lake Navajo State Park & Dam</strong></a>. In fact, the most famous section of the river, known as the "Texas Hole," was actually in sight of the dam. The water is crystal clear and the river extremely deep. We could actually see hundreds of huge trout swimming beneath our boat in virtually every section of the river we floated. We fished fast and slow moving sections and did equally well in both. The flys we used were called "Midges." The flys are incredibly small and are set up with barbless hooks. When you first see the flys your initial reaction is I can hardly see the thing, how are the fish going to find it. Don't worry, they will find it and they will bite it! </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here are more photos of the trip so you can get some perspective on this incredible stream. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The state of New Mexico offers incredible beauty that is truly unique in our country. While there are plenty of states that can boast to having great trout fishing, New Mexico stands alone in it's blend of red rock mountains, scenic vistas, huge sky, gorgeous trout streams and wild wild west look and feel. That probably explains why so many motion pictures are being filmed in the state these days. The video we have included in this post was taken from a spot where you are about as close to heaven on earth as one can get. Hope you enjoy the footage. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

There are truly more important measurements we should all be considering. Here are 10 things I feel are important enough to share with you. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1) Live by faith each and everyday of your life</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2) Take at least a few minutes to pray each day. We truly have much to be thankful for.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">3) Enjoy the beauty that is all around us. God created this place for us.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">4) Share our faith with others as we take our walk with the Lord.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">5) Respect God's creation by leaving this planet a better place than we found it.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">6) Take time to fish. It's good for the spirit!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">7) Remember to tell those special people in your life that you "Love Them."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8) Share your thoughts and feelings with those around you by taking time to write them down.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9) Spend time in the mountains. They provide a wonderful get away from busy city life. They deliver peace and solitude to the weary and give you time to reflect and time to talk with God!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">10) Have fun during your life! It's the only one you or I have! Lets agree that we won't waste our chance to really "Live It!"</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><em><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">May the grace and blessings of our heavenly father be with you all the days of your life! Make the most of your walk with the Lord while you are here! </span></em></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />

There are plenty of great spots, loaded with scrappy Brown, Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout, just waiting to meet you. If you've never been to the state, I highly recommend a visit. There is just something about this place that is absolutely magical. For me, it's the majestic mountain ranges, rivers and incredible smell of the sage brush, junipers and river reeds. I can go there and within minutes those wonderful aromas are drifting through my nostrils and I am at peace.</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">The Chama river is stocked, but, is full of native Browns that are usually in the mood to eat. The best natural baits are worms and salmon eggs. If you are more of a purest, try a number 12 or 14 Elk Hair Caddis or a streamer, such as an olive Woolly Bugger. The bait choice really depends on the time of year that you are fishing this river. There is no shame in using a worm if it's a slow fishing day! Remember, the idea is to catch fish and have a great time on the river. Sometimes, people become so focused on fly fishing they forget that rule! This river can sometimes challenge even the most experienced fisherman. In all my years of fishing the Chama, I have walked past hundreds of decked out fly guys who had empty creels. Not me :-)! </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">One of the premier catch and release areas in the state of Georgia is the Smithgall Woods Trout Conservation area. The river is located in the North Georgia mountains, not far from the town of Helen, Georgia. The stream flows through the Smithgall Woods State Park and is absolutely full of small to medium sized rainbows.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJMkPFZW2taOCniKEdzoipAfo37r62T7fMuxcF-TmI4LcQAlDJg4y-DIb1Cu4_dxQkv0YkHfrgZCmeADL6DwsVlLwM4lMeolFzvHxGuKtljbPE_-zL6vGhVA6kJUW7Px3ZO1mmLW0D3W4/s1600/photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJMkPFZW2taOCniKEdzoipAfo37r62T7fMuxcF-TmI4LcQAlDJg4y-DIb1Cu4_dxQkv0YkHfrgZCmeADL6DwsVlLwM4lMeolFzvHxGuKtljbPE_-zL6vGhVA6kJUW7Px3ZO1mmLW0D3W4/s320/photo.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">There are literally miles and miles of river frontage available to area fisherman. The park is only open to fishing 3 days each week and you must call ahead and secure an appointment. If you go during the week, you will have miles of stream to yourself. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><strong><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Smithgall Woods - Dukes Creek Trout Conservation Area</span></strong></div><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Dukes Creek and all tributary streams flowing within the Dukes Creek Conservation Area are open to fishing year round, but, don't forget, this is a by reservation only fishing area. You can make a reservation by contacting the State Park facility at Smithgall Woods by calling 706-878-3087. This area is artificial bait only! You may only use lures or flys with barbless hooks. Rangers patrol the facility so do yourself a favor and leave all other types of baits at home. You literally may not even have other types of bait in your possession while fishing at Smithgall Woods, Dukes Creek and/or it's tributaries.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-kTdQQ4rYSm2rG7dygA3v3jeorTtuEM56uE1Ne1g3Ntol8XoZfBF7omkQMDj0YTdTeYy_D3xDb-gpWPLw2iPQ60n12FTXD1SE0vV_mN28kAzhQDeHqGUnbGSVRRk0dmHhW6i9-Zoz3QM/s1600/covered1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="200" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-kTdQQ4rYSm2rG7dygA3v3jeorTtuEM56uE1Ne1g3Ntol8XoZfBF7omkQMDj0YTdTeYy_D3xDb-gpWPLw2iPQ60n12FTXD1SE0vV_mN28kAzhQDeHqGUnbGSVRRk0dmHhW6i9-Zoz3QM/s200/covered1.jpg" width="150" /></span></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Any trout you catch while fishing Dukes Creek and its tributaries must be immediately released where you catch them. No trout may be in your possession while fishing the stream in the Conservation Area. If you are looking to catch some larger fish, head down stream several miles. Go past the historical covered bridge (See Photo). Continue walking down the gravel forest service travel for another mile or so and you are going to find some really great trout water. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One thing you will learn quickly when fishing in Georgia. The trees and mountain brush grows right down to the edge of our streams. This can make for some very challenging casting. I strongly recommend that you learn the art of the roll cast. The roll cast is often the only way to work your fly into the </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">best areas.</span><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Trout streams in the Smoky Mountains are much different from those found in the western United States. Here is a winter time photo of one of hundreds of beautiful, but, small streams located throughout the Appalachian Mountain range. Don't underestimate these trout streams. They are very productive and full of rainbow, brown and brook trout.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Fish coming from Smoky Mountain rivers are generally much smaller than you see from the big western streams of California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington State and Wyoming. While Appalachian trout are generally smaller, the challenges of catching them exceed those you encounter out west. First, the terrain in the Smokies can be extremely challenging. You must content with heavy vegetation and trees that grow right down to the waters edge. This combines for some extremely challenging hikes and overnight camping trips. In addition, fly casting is at it's most challenging given the amout of vegetation you generally must contend with. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="211" l6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfi1mdOEfOyQnRriFxS5a3kQYm56sE0hsvLU0y6ooiv16spUP9on_32cX5pzpQnArFl_5rssBRR4WAmK7o5fFz_Or4I7CvKa2cbqVv1U6-y6B2cvPxNtOMAnvl5Gpa0444J5c7F5K2CbM/s320/Brown+Trout+-+Smoky+Mountain.jpg" width="320" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Check out this beautiful Appalachian Mountains trout. There are areas with much larger fish, but, generally those are private sections that require daily fees and guides. </span></div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Not to mention it's also the home of the Brown, Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout and the Lein Family!</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The state of New Mexico holds so many great memories for the Lein family. We have been camping and fishing at Coopers El Vado Ranch for many, many years. The fishing at the ranch is always great. We routinely catch 20 inch or larger Brown and Rainbow trout. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Even better than the fishing is the opportunity to spend time around David Cooper and his family. They own the ranch and are the most incredible folks you would ever want to meet. The fish in the picture below made for a wonderful fish dinner that evening. Brown trout, fried in an iron skillet, accompanied by Mimi's skillet fried hash brown potato's and Jannie's potato soup. Everyone was able to enjoy fresh fish and wonderful company. I ask you, does it get any better than that?</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">One thing I dearly love about the state of New Mexico is that it offers so many beautiful scenic vistas. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The state also has an incredibly large population of Mule Deer as well. These deer are not the small white tails that you see in other parts of the country. Folks, these Mule Deer are some hefty critters. One mule deer can supply enough meat to feed a New Mexico family all winter. </span></div>Flyline Search Marketinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13994208871654360480noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1165097449170515788.post-74164377005586544772010-08-19T19:42:00.000-07:002010-08-19T19:42:56.114-07:00New Mexico Produces Trout - Coopers El Vado Ranch<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTLlC9EkVZj6OHvwJu-qQoPSZoBiPoYxz28yzKccqR0onTqoKgiibXqyWQzeYHJN2zuuNu645HxeV9KvdsDh5NTGrMfjZOvcKf0lTgs0dRWu-WQC9m2HG07XAAfR8ZxogAwDkjT7oXhvk/s1600/Jan+w+Fish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" ox="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTLlC9EkVZj6OHvwJu-qQoPSZoBiPoYxz28yzKccqR0onTqoKgiibXqyWQzeYHJN2zuuNu645HxeV9KvdsDh5NTGrMfjZOvcKf0lTgs0dRWu-WQC9m2HG07XAAfR8ZxogAwDkjT7oXhvk/s320/Jan+w+Fish.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><strong>Coopers El Vado Ranch</strong></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong><span style="font-size: large;">Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico</span> </strong></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Have you ever seen a more beautiful spot to do some lake fishing? The lake at Yellowstone National Park is absolutely full of Yellowstone cutthroat trout, longnose dace, redside shiners, longnose suckers, and lake chubs. The lake is thought to hold the largest inland population of cutthroat trout found anywhere in the world. Where Yellowstone Lake and Yellowstone River come together, the bottom has a nice gravel bottom. That outlet has been a major spawning area for the Yellowstone cutthroat trout for as long as the park service have been studying the cutthroat trout populations. Years of overfishing in this area had caused a significant decline in cutthroat populations, however, fishing restrictions impossed by the park service have largely corrected that problem. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Ok, tell me that this picture doesn't make you want to travel to Wyoming and do some fishing in the Yellowstone River? Have you ever seen a prettier place to cast your line? When you arrive at the river you will realize very quickly that there are literally miles and miles of river to fish with very little competition from other fishermen. You may however, find that you have to compete with the local wildlife for some of the best spots. </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="131" hw="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheV4aM8-5O6uoVFB37YBe-Tw5oTWFH2SbFxe_Kf1obIZdPiEy4eFmycGlCSj1cH_P1uZ0CgZW-vHcu2LyYYSEhAQ2IqIN_t9uc09ED0ulItK8ver1gWrKjx6uSyPFqXaGD18i3Qytf3TM/s200/iStock_000012936200XSmall%5B1%5D.jpg" width="200" /> <img border="0" height="132" hw="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjojsnKBl8f-01HbaqiWD1SkI6tL6FyU08i-aJfRP3IMwaU4gJXEQczBOHfh8XuzidkI12PKm9M-aLgu9j4ZDRvZwisdEksTwbAVXE6wnVR2dBu6fr3gnp8tXjjsQcqKLCv530O2ZEmU5E/s200/IMGP5285%5B1%5D.JPG" width="200" /> </div></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Arkansas river flows from the Leadville, Colorado area, down through the San Isabel National Forest, past Canon City and Pueblo. There is some great fishing and excellent rafting one this stream.</span> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Arkansas River is a major tributary of the mighty Mississippi River. Sporting the reputation of being the sixth longest river in the United States, the Arkansas is more than 1,400 miles long. The River is narrow and fast down to approximately Canon City. Once it reaches Canon City it begins to widen markedly and stays that way down through Pueblo.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">There are a number of Fly Fishing shops located in towns along the river from Poncha Springs down through Pueblo. The river is perfect for wading and produces reasonably well from Spring through early Fall.</span> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yeap there are some mighty big fish at the bottom of this canyon and yeap it's really hard to get to them. There are some trails that lead down to the river. If you are in great shape, you can hike them to work your way down. The trails are challenging and not for those who aren't in really decent shape. It's a relatively wild environment at the bottom of the canyon. You won't see many folks down there. Take precautions because you may encounter wildlife. You should also pack extra food, water, etc as needed.</span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Don't forget your camera, because the scenery at the canyon floor is out of this world. You likely may encounter some type of wildlife on the trails and especially around the river. It's always adviseable to carry your bear pepper spray just in case. The chances of needing to use it are pretty slim, but, the one time you don't have it, may be the one day you really need it. Insect hatches are at their peak in July. There will likely be more fishermen on the river in July as the dry-fly anglers will be out in force. The big fish will be hitting the top water fly's. There is nothing more exciting! Here is a great fly fishing website that has great info that will help you on your trip (<a href="http://www.yellowstonenationalpark.com/flyfishing.htm"><span style="color: blue;"><strong>http://www.yellowstonenationalpark.com/flyfishing.htm</strong></span></a>).</span><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Roads into this area are only open to car traffic during the Summer months. Road Closure info is available through the national park service web site at (</span><a href="http://www.nps.gov/yell/index.htm"><span style="color: blue; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><strong>http://www.nps.gov/yell/index.htm</strong></span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">). We stongly encourage you to check with the parks service before driving a long distance to the park, only to find that the road you need is temporarily closed. Even in the spring and summer, sudden snowstorms can cause road closures in Yellowstone. If you are traveling through Yellowstone, you can also call <strong>307-344-2117</strong> for updates. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Also, make sure you have all the proper fishing permits for the area.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Most of you have heard of the Rio Grande river. It's one of the more well known rivers in New Mexico. The river also serves as an international boundry between the United States and Mexico. In fact, some of the more famous sections of the river run along the Texas and Mexico border. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">If you are looking to do some trout fishing, we suggest that you check out the section near South Fork, Colorado. The Rio Grande river in this area is pristine and the water is clear and absolutely beautiful. There are miles of river frontage that are accessible to the general public. You can expect to latch onto some rather nice rainbow and brown trout in this part of the stream. There are a handful of fly fishing shops in the within a 30 mile radius of the South Fork section. We encourage you to stop in at those fly shops and talk with the local owners. They can turn you onto the hot flys that are working on the river at the particular time of year that you happen to visit. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Take time to do some sightseeing while you are there. The San Juan mountains are breathtaking. The roads are reasonably good, kind of windy, but the secenary makes it all worth while. Make sure you take your camera. You will find plenty of opportunities to take some incredible photos. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Tell us about your fishing spots. Send an email to <a href="mailto:Flyline@bellsouth.net">Flyline@bellsouth.net</a>. Include photos of your big catch. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Jackson Lake in the Grand Teton mountains is one of the most beautiful and scenic places you will ever fish. Truthfully, the setting is absolutely breathtaking. The lake is touted as one of the largest high altitude lakes in the United States and when you see it for the first time it is truly a humbling experience. Only our heavenly father could have created something so incredibly beautiful. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The lake was formed right at the base of the Grand Teton mountains as you can see from this photo. It's full of pike, c</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">utthroat trout, brook and brown trout and of course salmon. The water is very deep some come prepared with an adequate fish finder. The lake is closed to fishing in August. Ice-fishing (not for me) is allowed during the winter months. I find the temperatures far too cold for my old bones. You may feel different. If so, wear warm cloths, as winters in the Tetons and in Yellowstone National park can produce some of the coldest temperatures you can possibly imagine. </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Lake Heron is full of trophy fish. I have personally trolled this lake with a local lake guide and found it to be quite productive. Aside from the wonderful fishing, I found the surrounding landscape to be absolutely breathtaking. Wildlife abounds in this area. You will routinely see Elk, Deer, wild Turkey and occasionally black bears. The lake is part of the New Mexico State Park system. The boat ramps are great and their is plenty of areas to camp. If you are seeking hotel accomomdations, you will need to stay closer to the town of Chama. </span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"></span></div><div align="justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">I truly hope this information is helpful to you.
